The Bride
The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. Revelation 22:17
In this series we’ll be exploring what’s called The Bride of Christ and the meaning for believers today; clearly there’s a connection between the Holy Spirit and the Bride.
Let’s begin at the beginning but where is the beginning? Gen. 1? Yes and no. God has no timeframe, He’s outside of time, that’s why we scratch our heads when we read:
… even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love … Ephesians 1:4
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you. 1 Peter 1:20
But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 1 Corinthians 2:7
We can surmise that the Trinity, Father, Son, and Spirit were active in fellowshipping, discussing, and planning Creation; there was divine activity in heaven, eternity past, before anything came into being in the present: we call it time. If the Spirit and the Bride are singled out at the end of the book then, logically, we can look for them at the beginning.
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:2
What’s the connection between the Spirit hovering and the Bride? Let’s look at some definitions. I have a great respect for Bible translators since their responsibility is to choose English to reflect Hebrew or Greek words. Many of them chose the activity of the Spirit to be hovering from Gen. 1:2. Hovering?
Well, it’s undoubtedly not a spiritual drone; its more like an overshadowing of something you’ve focused your attention. The Spirit of God was lingering over the planet, meditating, and brooding over the Plan because hovering includes staying positioned or hanging around with the sense of gentle, loving care and protection; the Spirit was carefully waiting for Their masterpiece to appear on the scene. He was thinking about us, cherishing this idea of image-bearers, God’s own offspring and how it would play out.
O Lord, what is man that You regard him, or the son of man that You think of him? Psalms 144:3
… what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him? Psalms 8:4
The Spirit or breath of God was musing over creation in love for He knew the Bride for the Father’s Son was among the seed of mankind and He was dwelling there, cherishing the anticipation of her arrival. Whether you’re male or female, now get this, you are the Bride.
