Kingdom Culture: Part Twelve
In today’s culture things happen fast: insta-pots, microwaves, instagram, and same-day delivery, however, the kingdom culture doesn’t. There’s time in the waiting room and it’s frustrating. Jesus is undoubtedly coming back as King to set up an eternal kingdom and we longingly wait for it … or do we?
And the Lord Himself, the King of Israel, will live among you! At last your troubles will be over, and you will never again fear disaster. Zephaniah 3:15b
Longingly wait for it.
Look! The Lord is coming! He leaves His throne in heaven and tramples the heights of the earth. Micah 1:3
Longingly wait for it.
This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed. Habakkuk 2:3
That unique Day will usher in the Kingdom of God unlike any other day since the beginning of time.
As the disciples bickered over who would be greatest in this coming kingdom Jesus reminded them that His Kingdom Culture won’t function like the world’s (Luke 22:24-27); His kingdom will operate in the opposite way; the greatest will serve without honor. Darn. He said the greatest honor and authority is reserved for those with a servant’s heart; the servants will be the leaders.
As Jesus continued discussing this future kingdom with His Twelve He mentioned a Kingdom Table (Luke 22:28-30) where each will have an assigned seat or throne ruling over the twelve tribes of Israel. Make no mistake, no one knows what that scene looks like but we do know there will be an extraordinary table, actually several distinguished tables. Stay with me.
There are two foreshadows of this Kingdom Table in scripture: the Passover meal described in Ex. 12 and the Lord’s Supper.
When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table. Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before My suffering begins. For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.” Luke 22:14-16
There’s another one-of-a-kind meal coming that will fulfill the true meaning of the kingdom: The wedding banquet or marriage supper of the Lamb.
Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us give honor to Him. For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and His bride has prepared herself.
And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” And he added, “These are true words that come from God.” Revelation 19:7, 9
As believers in Jesus Christ let’s be sure we’re anticipating our King and His unshakeable kingdom (Heb. 12:28-29) with a sense of longing and great expectancy knowing it’s designed for us: His Bride.
