Angels- Episode Four
I took my grandkids to see Star Wars last weekend, how appropriate for this series on angels. I chuckled when I had to explain the relationships between Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo; glad I took my boys to see it back in the 80’s. Christians participate in a type of Star Wars that’s invisible to our eyes, nevertheless, more real than any movie can portray. Our Luke Skywalker and Han Solo are not fictional characters, they’re real, they’re angels, and they’re on our side. Spurgeon said, “Angels are on our side because God is on our side.”
God drew back the curtain that separated the heavens from the earth so the prophet Elisha could view the action taking place in this invisible war:
“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.”
2 Kings 6:16-17 NLT
Jesus, the LORD of hosts or heavenly armies is the Captain and He’s on your side.
“O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; You have made heaven and earth.” Isaiah 37:16 ESV
The story of David and Goliath captures His name in the New Living Translation:
“You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. … And everyone assembled here will know that the LORD rescues His people, but not with sword and spear. This is the LORD’s battle, and He will give you to us!” 1 Samuel 17:45, 47 NLT
Jesus Christ, the head of the armed forces of land, sea, and air is called El Gibbor, Mighty Warrior:
“There is none like You, O Lord; You are great, and Your name is great in might.” Jeremiah 10:6 ESV
He’s the Commander-in-Chief of the heavenly company of armies standing in a united front against our enemies, with sword drawn.
The Lord goes out like a mighty man, like a man of war He stirs up His zeal; He cries out, He shouts aloud, He shows himself mighty against His foes. Isaiah 42:13 ESV
The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is His name. Exodus 15:3 ESV
Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.
Hebrews 1:14 NLT
The heavenly host, under the command of Jesus, battles for you in a spiritual war you cannot see but be reassured today, dear believer, He’s fighting for you, He’s dispatching angels in countless numbers, myriads, and you will ultimately win. Jesus cares about you, believe Him and His Word.
