Revelation 5:9-14
There is nothing quite like a worship service when everyone is focused on Jesus and the songs lead you into His presence. No matter how wonderful your experience is it cannot compare to worship in heaven. These verses show us why.
There’s a new song being sung that couldn’t be voiced before the Lamb took the scroll containing the plan and process of the last days. If you look back to Chapter Four and now in Chapter Five you’ll find five progressive choruses of praise to our God: first the four living creatures (4:8), then the 24 elders join in (4:11), they sing this new song in unison (5:9), angels join them (5:12), and finally all of creation (5:13).
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what He has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord. Psalms 40:3 NLT
This new song declares the worthiness of the crucified Christ to open the seals because He purchased, with His own blood, God’s chosen people: all believers. This transfer of ownership of the kingdoms of the world from Satan (Luke 4:5-7) back to God’s people from every race, language, people-group, or nation can finally commence.
There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. He gave His life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 NLT
Along with our regained title deed puts God’s original plan back on track from Gen. 1:26-28 where His image-bearers again have the kingly dominion on earth. This covenantal-promise was made to Abraham and remains for all time:
… in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Gen. 12:3b
… The purpose was to make him (Abraham) the father of all who believe … Rom. 4:11b
What is a kingdom of priests; without experience that’s difficult to envision. The purpose of kings is to serve the people and the purpose of priests was to serve God. When The Church accomplishes both we’re a ‘kingdom of priests’.
As worship closes out this chapter notice the words, some repeated, attributed to the Lord: power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, blessing, forever and ever. All of those character traits of Jesus Christ give us plenty to meditate on and we’ll need each one for the events that are about to unfold in the following chapters.
John’s vision gives us the opportunity to picture, use our imagination, as we worship along with the four living creatures, the 24 elders (unable to stand in His presence) and innumerable angels. They close out our time with a powerful “Amen!” That’s the truth.
May we never lose that sense of His awesomeness when we worship together acknowledging His solo performance in redeeming the chosen people of God
