Proverbs 31: Part Seven
As we complete Proverbs 31, words of a queen to her son, let’s continue focusing on the Hebrew words from verses 28-31. Remember, acrostic poems cover a topic from A to Z; let’s discuss her last four thoughts.
Verse 28 begins with the verb ‘to rise’; the family of strong, warring woman will stand up and declare that her walk of life is blessed. The Hebrew word indicates she walks a straight line or path in the favor of God; this woman knows Him personally and her life reflects it. You’ll find Jesus using the word ‘blessed’ in the Beatitudes of Matt. 5; this kind of woman understands how to be blessed.
The next verse (29) indicates that many women make up the ranks of believers but Ishah Chayil, this warring woman, is unique. She has a relationship with God, follows Him closely, receives His assignments and power, and has ascended to the top. She has achieved the position as general in God’s army, apparently not all women get there.
Ishah Chayil hasn’t gotten caught in the trap of concentrating on outward appearances because she knows they don’t necessarily reflect her inner soul. The first Hebrew word of verse 30 is deceit. It’s dangerous for women to analyze the lives of others comparing themselves and coming up short; it’s deceiving and elusive. Comparing yourself usually causes disappointment or pride: beware, both are dangerous.
Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. 1 Peter 3:3-4
Look at the contrast. A woman who is in awe of God (fears Him), honors Him with her life, and shines with His Spirit in her … this woman is to be commended. Trying to change your outward appearance is not living the higher life, the kingdom life, it’s futile and empty.
The last verse (31) of this mother’s heart is a request: give her a reward. Come alongside Ishah Chayil and help her achieve what God has placed on her heart. She desires results so work with her and accomplish great things for the kingdom. She’s been warring for her family, neighborhood, and church understanding spiritual warfare; she knows it’s all about her position in Christ.
If your desire is to mirror the character traits of a king like David or a queen like Esther, then progressively walk in kingdom principles.
He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great. I chased my enemies and caught them; I did not stop until they were conquered.
You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet.
Psalms 18:34-35, 37, 39
Fight for your family in His strength and power.
