The Theology of Suffering: Part Three

Stress. We know it’s part of life, inevitable, but we never seem to be ready. It causes poor sleeping, indigestion, headaches, or short tempers so you’d think we’d be prepared for it, but we’re not. Let’s allow God’s Word to aid us in this preparation for the troubles and trials of life that bring suffering and catch us unaware.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. James 1:2-4, 12

The word that stands out is endurance, a fascinating Greek word meaning to remain underneath something very heavy; like a weight laying across your chest compressing your lungs. Now, the pressure may be voluntary or involuntary, but you’re unshakeable to keep your position, unwavering in holding your ground. That’s endurance

There’ll undoubtedly be times you’ll want to give in or give up, however, in your study of the Theology of Sufffering your faith has become immovable. James wrote that when these various troubles in life show up we should consider them opportunities to experience great joy … what?! He explains endurance causes faith to grow stronger during trials and temptations, all the way to the victor’s crown. Always remember, it’s the Holy Spirit who gives us the power to endure and triumph over life’s suffering, and He willingly gives that power to you.

… and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might … Ephesians 1:19

Joy is a great word James used, meaning the inner attitude of trust in God’s sovereignty and goodness to get you through anything with the right attitude. He continued to focus on endurance developed through suffering, finally reaching the goal, wholeness: shalom, needing nothing. That only comes by faith in Jesus Christ that’s been tested and it’s how you consider suffering from the lens of joy.

Peter echoed James,

In His kindness God called you to share in His eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, He will restore, support, and strengthen you, and He will place you on a firm foundation. 1 Peter 5:10

And Paul confirmed,

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Ephesians 6:10a

Stress is temporary, pressures of life will come and go, however, God promises to constantly be with you every step of the way. Lean on Him and receive your crown.

May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ. 2 Thessalonians 3:5
