The Father: Part One

Am I the only one who wonders what God was doing before Gen. 1:1? It’s a fascinating study that requires searching scripture so let’s dive in.

God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And He said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent Me to you.’” Exodus 3:14

I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.” Revelation 1:8

God is outside of time, but where is fatherhood in this picture?

We say that God is all about relationships; He wants strong, healthy relationships with us and He wants the same thing with people in our lives. Why? Where did that idea even come from?

The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are equally God, however, we know from various passages that they have different roles. As the role of the father is head of the house we see where God came up with that plan: He’s the Father who guides and protects. It’s reflected in husband-wife relationships and father-children relationships.

Before time existed the Father and the Son had relationship and fellowship in heaven.

Jesus said:

“And now, Father, glorify Me in Your own presence with the glory that I had with You before the world existed … You loved me before the foundation of the world.” John 17:5, 24b

The Father loved the Son before time existed: it was an eternal relationship.

Paul began his prayer acknowledging fatherhood in Eph. 3:14-15:

I bow my knees before the Father from whom every family in heaven and earth is named.

The heavenly discussion of the Plan of Redemption between the Father and the Son would’ve been something to overhear! The Father explained the plan, the Son accepted it, and was therefore sent. There was unity in heaven as there is to be unity in families on earth. What did they get out of it? The Father received a personally chosen people for Himself and the Son received a Bride with offspring. Great plan.

Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world … Eph. 1:4

Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Matt. 25:34

But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 1 Cor. 2:7

… His works were finished from the foundation of the world. Heb. 4:3b

What was happening in heaven before the Gen. 1:1?

*Our eternal God was fellowshipping together, loving, and enjoying each other.

*The Father, true to His role, was formulating a plan for a people and a bride.

*The Son was in agreement and accepted the plan with the indwelling Spirit promised.

*There’s a kingdom waiting for us when Jesus returns.

All for our benefit.
