Advent Meditations Part Three: Signs

As we travel the US visiting National Parks my husband and I have learned to pay close attention to the ‘brown signs’; they direct our way so we don’t miss our turns. God has ‘brown signs’ too, they signal promises, gaining our attention, and direct our way so we don’t miss our final destination: reunited with God. Some of these signs are fulfilled and others remain waiting for fulfillment, but all give us reassurance of our salvation.

The first sign is found ‘in the beginning’ when God spoke to Satan regarding the coming of His Offspring,

“And I will put enmity (hostility) between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head, and you will strike His heel.” Genesis 3:15

That Offspring (or Holy Seed) was the coming Messiah who crushed the devil with His death and resurrection on our behalf. There was also the sign of a Seed or Offspring of Abraham (Gen. 12:7),

Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his Offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to One, “And to your Offspring,” who is Christ. Galatians 3:16

As we recognize these signs we’ll always be pointed in the right direction as we see with David’s sign,

When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your Offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish His kingdom. 2 Samuel 7:12

God was very clear over many generations, prophecies, and signs that He intended to enter into our world as a Holy Seed,

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14

If you’re not convinced that Jesus is the Seed or Son of God who fulfilled these prophecies there are more.

I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to Me, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You.” Psalm 2:7 This verse is quoted twice in Hebrews (1:5, 5:5)!

Now when you hear the familiar passages read during Christmas you have assurance that the signs are there leading you to Christ: your final destination.

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus … The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the Child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.” Luke 1:31, 35

I hope these meditations gain your attention helping you recognize the ‘reason for the season’: the fulfilled prophecies and ‘brown signs’ directing you to Jesus.
