God’s Core Values: Faithfulness

When someone is considered reliable, trustworthy, and keeps their promises we say they’re faithful. From the beginning of time God made promises and we’re assured that He’ll do what He said He’ll do.

God is not man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not fulfill it? Numbers 23:19

According to theologians more than 1,200 years before Jesus was born, God made a promise assuring the devil that One was coming to crush his head: his authority (Gen. 3:15). Whenever you read in Scripture that God said, “I will …”, it shows His faithfulness. It may take a while but it’s true, nonetheless.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4-5

Moses experienced that dependability or faithfulness of God desiring the people, now you and I, to experientially,

Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations. Deuteronomy 7:9

500 years before Christ the prophet Isaiah wrote some of God’s “I wills …” or promises:

I will send My Servant, I will put My Spirit upon Him, He will bring forth justice, He won’t grow faint or be discouraged, He will be the covenant to the people, He will be a light to the nations, opening blind eyes, and releasing captives (Is. 42:1-7). That’s the power of a promise.

After Jesus fulfilled all of the ancient prophecies He wasn’t finished making promises to prove His faithfulness. He will come again; you can take that to the bank.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also. John 14:3

This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven. Acts 1:11b

This core value of God should be our core value as a Christ follower; if He gave His Word on a matter it’s a done-deal. If we give our word … the same should be true.

He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it. 1 Thes. 5:24

As a disciple of Jesus we’re called to re-present Him to the world with trustworthiness, integrity, and dependability doing what we say we’ll do, keeping our promises.

My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:20-23
